Exercise physiologist for autism
Exercise physiology for autism is movement work that fits the person, not a gym programme with the name swapped in. Drift Health is a mobile NDIS team in Sydney. We come to the home or a nearby park and build sessions around how your child already moves, communicates and regulates.

How exercise physiology helps autism
Accredited exercise physiologists work on the physical skills that make daily life less hard: balance, coordination, strength, stamina, and the confidence to try a new movement without shutting down.
For autistic kids and teens, the blocker is often the environment, not the body. Fluoro lights, noisy gyms, unclear instructions, and a stranger asking for eye contact will tank a session before the first squat. We drop those. Sessions stay predictable. Instructions stay short. The goal is a skill they can use at home, at school, or in the park — not a perfect rep.
This is not behaviour therapy and it is not a social-skills class. If motor planning, fitness, or joining in play is the gap, that is the work.

What a session looks like
We come to you. First visit is an assessment: how they move, what they already like, what floods them, and what the NDIS goals actually ask for. You stay nearby. We do not drag anyone into a clinic they have never seen.
Later sessions look like play on purpose. A ball game, a trampoline, a walk to the park, strength work on the living-room floor. The structure stays the same visit to visit so the session is not a surprise. We change the dose, not the whole format, when regulation dips.
Parents get a plain recap: what we practised, why, and what to repeat between visits if that helps.

NDIS
Understanding your NDIS funding
Funding depends on your plan, disability support needs and available budget. Discuss the proposed support and fees before paid sessions.
Capacity Building
Exercise physiology is usually claimed under Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living or Improved Health and Wellbeing, depending on the plan. We work with self-managed and plan-managed participants across Sydney.
Goals that match the plan
Bring the plan, the current goals, and any allied-health reports you already have. We write goals in the same language the plan uses: getting dressed, lasting a full sport session, walking to the shops without melting down, sleeping better because the body actually got tired.
Check before you start
If you are not sure the funding line fits, book the free health check and we will say so before anyone starts.
Common questions
Does NDIS fund an exercise physiologist for autism?
Yes, when the plan includes capacity-building supports tied to functional goals. Most families we see use Improved Daily Living or Improved Health and Wellbeing. We confirm the line item before the first paid session.
What does an exercise physiologist do for an autistic child?
They assess movement, then coach the physical skills that sit under daily life and play — balance, coordination, strength, stamina — in a format the child can tolerate. At Drift that happens at home or in a local park, not in a busy gym.
Is this the same as physiotherapy?
No. Physiotherapy is the better fit for acute injury, pain, or a specific joint problem. Exercise physiology is the better fit for fitness, motor skill, stamina, and building a routine someone will actually keep. Some kids need both. We will say if they do.
Do you only work with children?
Most of our autism caseload is kids and teens. We also work with autistic adults on NDIS plans when the same in-home, low-sensory format is what they want.
Where in Sydney do you go?
We are mobile. Sessions are at home or a nearby park across greater Sydney. If your suburb is outside the usual run, ask — we will tell you straight.
